After 63 years of service Russell retired yesterda After 63 years of service Russell retired yesterday.  Many of you will know him for his extraordinaire snowmobile grooming and grading of our roads. But Russell was MUCH more than this. Russell has worked in some way shape or form with Haliburton Forest since he was in grade 10, turning 77 this September.

When he first started he got his engineer license, worked at the onsite sawmill but on weekends would put in campsites, and trails throughout the property. As the years went he was integral in forming what Haliburton Forest is today.

You know all those fun snowmobile trails you ride? Russell was more than likely at the helm of plowing through and getting them cut, groomed and in pristine shape. He was part of building the on site fish hatchery at Blue Lake, stocking efforts, he helped run the office, maple syrup operations, brushing roads, helped with logging operations, to name a few!

He was ALWAYS the first to go across the lakes in the winter to lay the first tracks, and came in on his weekends off to patrol the trails.

He somehow was always in the right place at the right time to catch run away dog sleds.  We'd get on the radio and he would let us know he already caught them, with a smirk and an eye roll!  😅

Russell was always up for a chat about the incredible adventures he has lead over the many years here having out lasted multiple owners and managers of the property. He is the most adventurous, bad ass person I have ever met. BUT if you really want to get him talking ask him about his family, his grandkids, their hockey, etc... Nothing brings Russell more joy and pride than his beautiful, and loving family.

Russell has been the back bone keeping this operation in tip top shape for decades, early morning plowing so our parking area is ready for our snowmobilers, ensuring our crews have the same pride in our trails and roads as he does. He has been our wise advisor for many years and he is going to be missed dearly!

So everyone raise a glass 🍻 and wish Russell well on this next chapter of his life!

Enjoy this video his daughter put together that is just a the tiniest glimpse of his life at Haliburton Forest.

Today, @tegsadventure and Nick, Land Stewardship M Today, @tegsadventure and Nick, Land Stewardship Manager, of the Haliburton Highlands Land Trust @haliburtonlandtrust head up north of the property to check on the Manoomin/Wild Rice growth. It is still too early to tell how the growth is going, but Tegan is wanting to learn the various stages of growth and what better way to do that than with someone who has studied and worked with aquatic plants for over ten years, with a special interest/focus on Manoomin AND has worked with the folks that put rice back in to Rice Lake!

Nick has a keen interest in Manoomin and reached out to learn more about our re-introduction of the plant in our lakes, so what better way to explain the project than show him.

This will be the second year of growth since Tegan and Caleb @canadian.bushcraft.official put rice in, in the fall of 2024.

Next check will be at the end of August leading in to harvesting season! Hope to catch some flowers before they go to seed!

Apologies that Nick's volume is so low I'm getting used to a new phone.

We see loons almost everyday along the canoeing po We see loons almost everyday along the canoeing portion of the Canopy Tour route but the other day our guests AND guides were treated by a rare and exciting encounter!

This loon got right up close and personal. It even swam under the canoe!

This is more typical behaviour of a loon protecting its nest but this one was calm, just swimming around and under the canoe. Didn't seem bothered by their pressence. None the less our guides kept things calm and moved along to not disturb the loon any further.

Thank you to guide extraordinaire @abi.tasker
for the great pics 📸 and excitement telling us the story.

It was all hands on deck @haliburtonforestwolfcent It was all hands on deck @haliburtonforestwolfcentre for our annual summer cleaning of the windows, weed wack, and other miscellaneous repairs.

In an effort to disturb the wolves the least amount possible we get in and out quick which requires a small army. We were in and out of the enclosure in less than an hour and then we fed the wolves as a thank you for their patience.
