Adventure Packages, Camps and Special Events Each year Haliburton Forest organizes a variety of outdoor related packages, camps and special events for nature enthusiasts. Well known experts in their fields will introduce you to the wonders of nature and skills you did not know you had. Cozy accommodations and hearty meals are provided for many of the programs. Adventure Packages for 2012: Snowshoe Trek and Winter Camping Weekend Limited to 12 hardy participants! Haliburton Forest is a truly spectacular winter wonderland! What better way to enjoy the snow then to embark on a 2 day, 1 night winter camping adventure with us! The weekend begins at the Haliburton Forest Base Camp where participants will join their guide and be immersed into the unique world of snowshoe trekking and winter camping. A sense of adventure, humour and activity is required. Dates: January 21-22 Time: Saturday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Sunday Fee: $145.00 per person Included: All necessary gear (snowshoes, cooking equipment, etc.), 2 delicious lunches at the Cookhouse Restaurant, 1 breakfast and dinner at campsite as well as overnight accommodation in a Walled Tent equipped with a Wood Stove and a sleeping platform
Women Only Winter Weekend Calling all adventurous women! Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, shelter building and a visit to the Wolf Centre! What more do we need to say! Women from all walks of life will join one of our professional female guides and experience winter wilderness adventure at its finest, while developing their winter outdoor skills. Dates: January 27-29 Time: Friday 4:00 pm – Sunday at 2:00 pm Fee: $375.00 per person Included: As our guest, you will enjoy the comforts of our cozy accommodations at Base Camp, in a private room with shared kitchen, living room and washroom facilities. Delicious meals from dinner on Friday to lunch on Sunday will be served at the Cookhouse Restaurant. As well as all programming and necessary equipment.
Family Adventure Camp Weekend full of Family Fun! Spend a weekend with your family enjoying our adventure based programs. Our professional Outdoor Education Staff will guide your family through our experiential education program providing new options and tools to aid all participants in working closely as a team! Families will have the opportunity to select and design the weekend’s activities. Activities may include traversing the High Ropes Course, challenging themselves on the Rock Climbing wall, Mountain Biking, Canoeing, Hiking, Teambuilding and Leadership Skills – family style! In the evening sit back enjoy the campfire, listen to the loons, learn about the night sky and howl to the wolves. Dates: July 13-15 Time: Friday 4:00 pm – Sunday at 2:00 pm Fee: $165.00 per adult, $155.00 per child 16 and under Included: Delicious meals from dinner on Friday to lunch on Sunday, as well as all programming and necessary equipment. Your family will stay in our solar powered cabin at Stocking Lake; it’s rustic!
Women Only Adventure Weekend Rest and rejuvenation are in store! Bring your wild sense of adventure and challenge your inner child to a weekend of hanging out with the girls in a pristine lakeside setting. This weekend will teach you valuable skills in outdoor living. Our professional female Outdoor Education Staff will guide you canoeing, teach you GPS navigation, and encourage you to push your limits on our high ropes course and rock climbing wall. Learn new recipes for outdoor cooking and some valuable wilderness survival tools. Awaken your abilities in the wilderness with the support of other women sharing in this worthwhile experience. Enjoy the silence of this remote location on the shores of Stocking Lake and rejuvenate yourself! Dates: July 20-22 Time: Friday 4:00 pm – Sunday at 2:00 pm Fee: $225.00 per person Included: Delicious meals from dinner on Friday to lunch on Sunday, as well as all programming and necessary equipment. Wolves and Wildlife Come for a howling good time! A great weekend getaway is planned that includes informative discussions and presentations on wolves. Topics will include wolf biology, social structures, wolf/human relations and predator/prey interactions. Guest speakers add to this fascinating weekend. Time will be spent viewing our resident pack, observing an interpreted feeding and taking a hike into wolf country. The weekend is topped off with an evening wolf howl. Ensure to bring a camera for this engaging weekend getaway! Camps for Youth 2012: March Break Day Camp (Ages 8-12) Youth - Not sure what to do over the March Break? Look no further! Winter is one of our favourite seasons at Haliburton Forest. Our Outdoor Education Staff love to show how much fun can be had in the snow! Join us for 3 days of snowshoeing, winter survival, orienteering and so much more. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the sled dog kennels and Wolf Centre during their time with us. Dates: March 13-15 Time: Daily 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Fee: $80.00 per person Included: All programming, necessary gear and admission to the Wolf Centre.
Adventure Day Camp I (Ages 7-11) Step One - Spend the summer outdoors! The Adventure Day Camp I has been established to provide outdoor skills and pursuits instruction in a safe and fun-filled learning environment. This weeklong day camp will provide opportunities for growth and development of skills and knowledge in a number of outdoor skills and pursuits. Guided by our trained Outdoor Education Staff, the participants will have opportunity to select and design the week’s activities. Activities may include canoeing, wilderness travel, group games, wolf studies, tracking, camp crafts, low ropes and so much more! Dates: July 2-6, July 30- August 3 and August 6-10 Time: Daily 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Fee: $175.00 per youth Included: All equipment needed for programming and craft supplies.
Adventure Day Camp II (Ages 10-14) Step Two – Challenging you with an overnight! The Adventure Day Camp II is the next step in outdoor adventure for youth. This active camp is available to youths who have developed a level of comfort in the outdoors. Campers will take part in an overnight camping experience on the Thursday night. This action packed camp may include: canoeing, swimming, wilderness travel, rock climbing, high and low ropes as well as outdoor pursuits such as tracking, orienteering and camping skills. Dates: July 23-27 Time: Daily 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (except Thursday) Fee: $185.00 per youth Included: All equipment needed for programming, except personal gear for the Thursday night (i.e. sleeping bag, clothing, etc...). Thursday dinner, Friday breakfast and lunch.
Adventure Wilderness Experience III (Ages 12-15) Final Step – The Canoe and hiking trip! The Adventure Wilderness Experience III is the final step in becoming a true outdoors person! This week long outdoor leadership camp builds on the success of previous day camps. Youth will spend the week with our professional Outdoor Education staff in the forest hiking, canoeing and camping. Throughout the week participants may have the opportunity to take part in rock climbing, high ropes, night hikes, mountain biking and so much more. This is an exciting opportunity for youths interested in taking their wilderness experience to a new level. Dates: July 2-6 Time: Monday 9:00 am – Friday 4:00 pm Fee: $400.00 per youth Included: All equipment needed for programming, except personal gear (i.e. sleeping bag, clothing, etc...) and meals from lunch on Monday to lunch on Friday
Adventure Mountain Biking Day Camp (Ages 12 – 15) This is a 5 day camp for mountain biker’s ages 12 to 15 to explore the Forest trails with a guide. All campers must know how to bike. If bikers are more comfortable on their own bikes and helmets they are more than welcome to bring them. The group will meet at Base Camp every morning at 9:00 am and pick their route for the day. We have over 300km of trails to choose from. Every biker must bring their lunch, water bottle and other personal gear in a backpack. The biking instructor will carry a repair kit with them and bikers will learn quick fixes along the way and also spend time on bike maintenance. Dates: August 6 – 10 Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm Fee: $180.00 per person plus HST Included: All equipment needed for programming.
Astronomy Weekend Camp (Ages 10-15) Star Watchers Wanted! This two night camp offers the chance to learn about the many different aspects of astronomy. Campers will have the chance to build their own Astronomer’s Tool Kit, learn about the science, and mythology of astronomy as well as view the night skies through our 10 and 12 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. They will also have the opportunity to explore the night sky through our planetarium. Dates: July 27-29 Time: Friday 4:00 pm – Sunday 11:00 am Fee: $130.00 per youth Included: All equipment needed for programming, except personal gear (i.e. sleeping bag, clothing, etc...) and meals from dinner on Friday to breakfast on Sunday
2012 Annual Events: Snowmobile Poker Run Come support a great cause! This popular fundraising event is now in its 23rd year and has raised more than $150,000.00 for a local charity. Participants ride the trails from shelter cabin to shelter cabin collecting tokens along the way. These shelter cabins provide a wonderful opportunity to warm up, share a story with a friend and have a warm coffee, hot chocolate or even a plate of pancakes. At the end of the day tokens are turned in for a draw of a Poker hand. Top prize will be awarded a new snowmobile. All proceeds will go to the Haliburton Volunteer Fire Department for all their selfless efforts. Date: February 18 Time: Saturday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Fee: $50.00 per person Included: Day pass to the Haliburton Forest snowmobile trails
In Search of the Elusive Wolf Wanted - Wolf Enthusiast! Haliburton Forest is made up of many diverse and healthy ecosystems. Amongst the local flora and fauna we are home to one the most spectacular yet misunderstood mammals of Ontario, the wolf! Come spend the day on snowshoes with our resident biologist and learn about the natural history of the area while searching for evidence of these elusive creatures. Date: February 25 Time: Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Fee: $55.00 per adult or $35.00 per youth (youth must be able to spend an active day outdoors) Included: A hearty campfire lunch in the heart of the forest and snowshoes if needed.
March Break Fun at the Wolf Centre Add a little extra to your Wolf Centre visit! Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the March Break we invite families to join our staff at the Wolf Centre for an afternoon of fun and educational activities. Watch our hilarious puppet show, listen as Twig, our forest Nome tells stories, and create fun wolf arts and crafts. Dates: March 12, 14 and 16 Time: 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm Fee: Regular admission fees apply. No registration is required. Included: All craft materials, entrance to the Wolf Centre and afternoon programming.
Celebration of Research – Conference What happens behind the scenes at Haliburton Forest? Haliburton Forest is a truly diverse company offering recreational opportunities along side of our forestry operations. What some of you may not know is that we are continuously conducting research which encompasses many aspects of Haliburton Forest including but not limited to forest ecology, climate change, tree health, etc... Haliburton Forest has many research partners. Celebration of Research has been established to allow them to share their research and findings with others. Date: May 11 Time: Daily 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Fee: Free and everyone is welcome. Included: All presentations.
Birdathon Bird Brain? The Birdathon has become a tradition amongst our campers at Haliburton Forest. One day a year during the spring migration we ask all professional and amateur birders alike to scour the forest in search of their 2 legged, feather friends. Some participants have figured that it is just as much fun to sit back and let the birds come to them. Either way the information collected is equally as important in assisting Haliburton Forest in its long-term monitoring of bird populations. Date: May 20 Time: 12:00 am – 11:59 pm Fee: Although the Birdathon is free, regular admission fees to the Forest do apply. Everyone is welcome! Included: A bird check list, the chance to win great bird prizes and a fun filled day!
The Forest Festival The Forest Festival offers a rich mixture of the performing arts within the incomparable wilderness beauty of Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve Ltd. The 2011 season offered our enthusiastic patrons an outstanding smorgasbord of professional Canadian musicians in unparalleled, unique venues. Once again, our eclectic little Festival successfully presented a variety of musical genres to a very discerning audience. The Forest Festival Advisory Committee is already hard at work planning the 2012 Season. The dates have been set; they are Wednesday August 15 to Sunday, August 19, 2012. Again we will be offering 7 concerts shared between the beautiful Bone Lake Amphitheatre and our wonderful Logging Museum at Base Camp. Haunted Trail and Mad House! Get ready to scream! The Saturday before Halloween join Haliburton Forest staff if you dare for a bone chilling night of tricks and treats! As the stars align and the impending All Hallows Eve approaches the unrested spirits of Haliburton Forest are strong and walk the thin line between this world and the next. Please wait for your ghostly hosts at the Wolf Centre parking and be escorted through the haunted trail up to the spine chilling mad house! Be prepared for the scare of your life! The forest is dark at night! Date: October 27 Time: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Fee: Admission is by donation. Included: Candy and a night of screams!
2012 Summer Evening Programs: Natural History Presentations Haliburton Forest offers a wide variety of landscapes, ecosystems and habitats. In partnership with organizations and individuals, many facets of this diverse web of life have been explored over the past years. The 1-2 hour presentations Tuesday nights will focus on this research and will be delivered by the experts themselves. Dates: Tuesdays in July and August Time: 7:00 pm Fee: Admission by donation to help support the scientific research being conducted at Haliburton Forest. Included: An informative and insightful presentation in our Seminar Building.
Wolf Howl Thursday evenings at 8:00 pm Haliburton Forest staff offer a public Wolf Howl. Participants gather at our seminar building to hear a presentation on wolves, their ecology and relationship with humans. After this presentation, the group is taken for a short hike where the interpreter will attempt to “howl up” our resident pack. We cannot guarantee a response, however we do have a good track-record! Dates: Thursdays in July and August Time: 8:00 pm Fee: Admission by donation to help support the scientific research being conducted at Haliburton Forest. Included: Presentation, short hike and a Wolf Howl.
Astronomy Program Friday nights you are welcome to join us for a fascinating evening under the stars! Our resident astronomer will take you out to the on-site, dark sky observatory to view and learn about the night sky. The outdoor portion of the program will only be held on clear nights. In case of cloudy nights, an exciting indoor, planetarium program awaits visitors. Dates: Fridays in July and August Time: July start time 9:30 pm and August start time 9:00 pm Fee: $20.00 per adult, $15.00 per youth under 18. Pre-registration is required. Included: Short hike under the stars, planetarium presentation and/or a tour of the night sky.
